Black screen problem with sony vaio VPCM126AG

Recently I had the dreaded black screen problem with my sony vaio VPCM126AG netbook. The net book just used to go to black screen on booting. I contacted both Sony and Intel and neither were able to provide me with successful resolution.

It was working fine in safe mode, but otherwise when not in safe mode, it was going into black screen just in the login screen. This suggested issue with the graphics driver. My netbook is having on board Intel GMA 3150 graphics driver. Then I remembered seeing an update to my graphics driver through windows update and I became pretty sure that it was the one which broke my netbook.

The only solution was to downgrade the driver. The version of driver which rescued me is 8.14.10.1972. That’s the one I’m currently using without any problem. You can download this version from http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=18496&ProdId=3235&lang=eng

Just download this package, get into safe mode, uninstall the current display driver from device manager, reboot, get into safe mode again and install the downloaded driver.

Also, very important is to make sure that you hide the driver update from the windows update list.

I spend lots of time troubleshooting this one so I hope this will help you some of you out there in the same situation.

Cheers!

Failed to communicate with WCF – FAST Search

Recently I was stuck with this issue when I tried to run the “Get-FASTSearchMetadataCrawledProperty ” in my DEV machine. This was right after I installed FAST server in my standalone SP 2010 installation.

Resolution – Install the SP 1 for FAST search. You can download the installation from here

All the best!

FAST search not crawling particular Document Library

June 20, 2012 Leave a comment

Recently we faced a weird issue in our SharePoint 2010 environment. We are using FAST search for SharePoint server 2010 as the search provider. We noticed that FAST crawler was not crawling document from a particular document library. It was working fine for all other document libraries. We checked the initial settings like whether or not search results were allowed to be displayed from the document library and everything looked good. The issue was finally resolved once we changed the “Draft” items security from “Only users who can edit items” to “Any users who can read items” under “Versioning Settings” of the document library.

Once this change was done, FAST crawler was able to pick up documents from this document library. Weird issue and I’m still trying to find the cause for this behavior.

After a long break…………

May 29, 2012 Leave a comment

Hello Friends!

Here I am again after a loooooooooooooong break! Well, things have been pretty insane at my end. The vastness, the ubiquitous nature, the illegible messages, the deep rooted settings makes SharePoint the most daunting as well as exciting thing out there. We’ve since migrated from MOSS 2007 to SharePoint 2010. New UI, new features, new SharePoint! It looks like a complete new product made from scratch. I can very well imagine how much MSFT has out effort to  make it a success, and as things stands now, it looks very very good. From an administrator point of view, there have been many improvements, developers are excited as well with new features like developer dashbaord, client side OM etc. Over the few days, I will try to pen down my experience so far, which I am sure will help each one of you in your path to migration. So, keep reading my blog and as usual, please comment on how I can improve it more going forward. Your opinions are precious for me!

Cheers and take it easy!
